I guess it started with having a general aversion to the commercialization of Christianity.
For a while, I avoided much of the produce of institutional Christianity. The books, the products, the television, and especially the music! I had just become bloated with the fluff of it all, the shallow commercial feel that it had for me. I could unpack that a whole lot more, but I don't know that it would be, as they say, "edifying".
So, that brings me to my point. There is a price for this kind of avoidance! Recently, I was in a local electronics/music/video superstore browsing with an in-store-credit card in my wallet. I decided to buy some music with said credit, and had already picked out a Daft Punk cd, and a James Blunt cd. I decided to wander over to the relatively small "Christian" music section. After staring blankly at the same few artists who seem to comprise the bulk of what is recorded in this genre, I picked up a cd with a name vaguely familiar to me. I was intrigued by the cover photo. Here is a guy wearing a shirt that has questions written on it with what looks like black marker. Questions like, "what if Jesus meant everything he said?", "what is beauty?", "what is church supposed to look like?", and "does prayer work?". The album's title is "Better Questions", the artist, Todd Agnew. I bought it.
This album is a breath of fresh air, this artist is a breath of fresh air! I guess he has been around for a while, I even recognize his earlier work like "Grace Like Rain". It is weird, because a hearing this song inspired me to write a poem on justice a few years back. I just never took notice of whose song it was. Through the avoidance I wrote about, I have been missing out on this guy's work!
So, I highly recommend that you BUY (not steal through illegal download), this album!
Here is a review of the album I found on yewToob (it is just the first couple of minutes), to give you an idea of what to expect:
