Apparently, there are three types of folks you encounter when you are hanging out and sharing of your thoughts, struggles, and concerns:
Listeners - simply listen without responding in an obviously discernible manner
Fixers - offer their best guess or prescription for what you should do
Distracters - like being with you, they just don't feel comfortable with intimacy and will 'change the subject'
Is this true? If so, which is the best one?

Out of those, I'm definitely the listener. Not sure what the "best" one is.
I would see that, in certain circumstances, we may each fall into one of these catagories BUT then as we mature we better develope the ability to excercise the behavior appropriate for the sharer.
I don't think Distracter is a fair category.
Suppose Joe wants to talk about football. Sue doesn't. Joe talks to sue about football and she tries to change the subject. I don't see how this has anything to do with feeling comfortable or not. Some people have no desire to discuss certain topics and are honest in expressing how they feel.
